Buying a bass guitar for a novice can be tricky... there are a ton of cheap beginner basses out there, but many of them feature cheap hardware, and shoddy workmanship. The trick is to find a bass guitar that is both easy to learn on, yet also easy on the pocketbook. The following bass is one of the best valued bass guitars on the market. ESP B50 Bass This funky looking bass features a basswood body (a relatively soft wood), with maple neck, and rosewood fingerboard. Fender Precision Bass vs. Jazz Bass

Written by admin on June 27, 2009 – 5:47 pm -

Fender's Precision and Jazz Basses dominate the world of bass guitars; and that's no accident! Leo Fender and his small crew invented the first electric bass guitar more than 50 years ago. And though there have been many changes to both models over the past 50 years, the new P Bass or J Bass you buy today still carries the tradition of the classic originals. So how do they differ? What makes a player choose one over the other? The primary differences can be summed up in three areas: the body, the neck and the pickups. If I said you have a beautiful body... The Precision Bass looked radical in 1951. Its deep double cutaways and forward-raked design was like nothing the guitar world had seen. And it preceded the Stratocaster (which has a similar... more

B.B. King’s Lucille

Written by admin on June 23, 2009 – 3:44 am -

Lucille: The name of every one of B.B. King's guitars. As legend has it, King was playing a dance hall in Arkansas during the winter of 1949 when two men, fighting over a woman named Lucille, knocked over a flaming barrel of kerosene that was being used to heat the hall. Realizing that he had left his guitar in the building, King dashed back in to retrieve the acoustic instrument. He named that guitar, and every one since, "Lucille" to remind him not to do something as stupid as running into a burning building. While there have been many “lucilles,” the Epiphone has been on his favorites. This Lucille was Designed by B.B. King Himself! The Epiphone B.B. King Lucille is a unique instrument - designed by BB King himself! A semi-hollow Body... more

Tips on Buying Your First Guitar

Written by admin on June 14, 2009 – 5:18 am -

by Dan Cross Electric vs. Acoustic “Which is better to learn on… an electric guitar, or an acoustic guitar?” The answer to that question, despite what many would lead you to believe, is a little more complicated than “electric is best”, or “acoustic is best”. To find an answer for this question yourself, let’s begin by learning a little bit about both electric and acoustic guitars, and what makes them different. Acoustic Guitar This is the instrument most people think of when they think “guitar”. An acoustic guitar is hollow, and almost always has a “sound hole” - a round hole in the face of the guitar. Acoustic guitars almost always have six strings. When you strike the strings of an acoustic guitar, the instrument... more

Things to Consider When Purchasing a Guitar

Written by admin on June 14, 2009 – 5:10 am -

Dave Hunter Here are some quick but important checks you’ll want to make when first picking up any used guitar. This can be applied to instruments for sale in guitar stores, as well as pawnshops, estate sales and garage sales. GENERAL CONDITION 1) Neck: is it straight (with sometimes just a little relief, as necessary)? Does the truss rod function? (Check relief—measure string clearance around the middle of the neck while holding down the low E string at both the first and final fret — and make a quick adjustment if necessary.) Do the frets have some life in them? The cost of a complete fret job is likely to nullify any “bargain” you think you’re getting, unless it’s a real steal on a desirable model. Are there any cracks or... more
